Lumberjacks and Heli-logging

Beskrivelse:

Dette undervisningsopplegget kan om ønskelig brukes som et opplegg sammen med undervisningsopplegget "The Moose and the Sparrow" http://fyr.ndla.no/nb/teachingprogramme/3590.

Grunnleggende ferdigheter:

  • Skriftlige ferdigheter- gjennom skriveaktivitetene.
  • Muntlige ferdigheter- gjennom diskusjon av oppgavene.

Sluttprodukt: Elevene skriver en tekst om hva de har lært om tømmerhoggere og Heli Logging. Lærer fastetter kriteriene til skriveoppgaven.

Introduction:

Before reading about the origins of lumberjacks you are going to start with two pre-reading activities. The purpose of these activities is to find out what you know about the lumberjack trade and to prepare you for the non-fiction text about lumberjacks, which we will read afterwards.

Pre-reading activity 1: (5 minutes of free writing + 10 minutes of mind-map in class)

1a) Write down everything you know about the lumberjack trade, include things like what they work with, tools they use, location, working condition etc.

1b) Share your answers with the rest of the class and create a mind-map on the blackboard. The students will write down the mind map.

Pre-reading activity 2: (3 minutes of free writing)

2a) What does a typical lumberjack look like? Write down your description of a lumberjack; include features such as looks, body type, clothes etc.

2b) Share your answers with the rest of the class while your teacher writes down keywords from your answer on the black board.

2c) Class discussion: Look at your keywords from the black board. How are your descriptions of a typical lumberjack similar and different? Your teacher writes down keywords from your answer on the black board and you will write them down on your paper.

Reading a factual text:

Read the text in class about the origins of lumberjacks http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/articles/canada/lumberjacks-of-canada/2724

Watching video-clips:

  1. In order to get a sense of the atmosphere and working conditions of the lumberjack trade watch the video-clips together in class:

Man's Work-Canadian Heli-Logging pt1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Uo1kvc3rk

Man's Work-Canadian Heli-Logging pt 2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq-cM74Zaoc

Man's Work-Canadian Heli-Logging pt 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrfbCyOr6s

Sit in pairs and discuss the following questions: (7 minutes)

a) Based on what you saw in the video clips, what do you think about the Heli-Logging trade? Is this a type of job that you would like to try?

b) What did you learn about the Heli-Logging trade from the video-clips, which you did not have any previous knowledge about?

Writing a text:

Write a text about Lumberjacks and Helli Logging. Include your answers from the discussion above.

Lærer: Fastsetter kriteriene for skriveoppgaven.

Her kan elevene vurderes muntlig. Elevne kan skrive en større tekst om Lumberjacks and Heli Logging. Denne teksten kan da vurderes skriftlig.
