Constructions and Instructions


Based on the Landmarks in Construction text from Workshop vg1 Bygg- & anleggsfag, and Strømmen vgs’ bridge construction exercise, this lesson plan deals with understanding competence aims, writing instructions and assessing an end product.

Teaching objectives. Pupils should:

  • understand what competence aims represent, and how they are used in class
  • expand their vocabulary related to building and construction
  • learn how to write informal and instructional texts
  • assess their own work
  • present their work to the class

Discuss the following with your class:

  • What do we need to think about when we explain something to someone a) unskilled and b) skilled in our profession?
  • What are competence aims, and why do we use them?
  • How can we “decrypt” competence aims to gain a better understanding of school tasks (and tasks given to us at the workplace)?

"Homework” during this period: Learn relevant construction terms using Quizlet. There will be a vocabulary test after the presentations.

Lesson 1 – Bridge construction

The pupils are introduced to the task at hand. They will build a bridge using only tape and newspapers. The teacher introduces the criteria and “competence aims” (set individually, or use the ones found in appendix 1).

The pupils should work together in groups of 3-4, and complete the following tasks:

1. construct the bridge according to the instructions given

2. assess their own work, both by discussing it in their own group and by completing a form where all competence aims are given along with a comments box

3. assess at least one other group’s work in the same way as in 2

This class should end with a discussion on competence aims (can be done in Norwegian). Remember to keep the bridges for next week.

Lesson 2 – Writing instructions

This lesson deals with language style and word choice for writing building instructions. The teacher explains the use of instructions, along with examples of style, command verbs and tense (source: English Online)

After completing the instruction phase, the pupils have a go at writing instructions for making their newspaper bridge. Make sure they focus on correct style, word choice, command verbs and tense.

Lesson 3 + 4 – Presentation task

The pupils are now introduced to the presentation task, which entails giving a short talk on one of the processes they have worked on during construction class (Here, cooperation with contact teachers is essential). The presentation should be aimed at either skilled or unskilled workers, and the pupils need to choose which one they want and reflect on style and word choice.

3. Give pupils time to reflect on the task at hand before starting their individual work (You could have them write a short text on their chosen process).

Lesson 5 + 6 – Presentations and self-assessment

Have the pupils present their work to class, and give them a chance to write a self-assessment text afterwards. Suggestions for reflection points:

  • Did I manage to follow style and word choice guidelines as discussed in class?
  • Was my presentation understandable for the audience I chose?

Lesson 7 – Vocabulary test

Use the Quizlet word list, and create a test (print the test module on the website). This may serve as an additional grade, in addition to the presentation and reflection text.
